Analysts at UOB explained that UK PM Theresa May’s lunch with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday (4 Dec) failed to achieve a breakthrough for a Brexit deal due to a last minute opposition over the Irish border.

"According to Bloomberg report (4 Dec), the lunch meeting was interrupted by a phone call between May and Arlene Foster -- the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - which insisted that any proposal that would apply to Northern Ireland and not the rest of the UK was going to be a problem.

After the call, Juncker emerged to deliver a two-minute statement saying “it was not possible to reach a complete agreement today.”
